Live on the Left Coast: Andrew Bird at Richard’s on Richards

Andrew Bird and his band (drummer Martin Dosh and bassist/guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker) kicked off their fall tour last night at Richard’s on Richards in Vancouver, BC. It was my first time seeing Mr. Bird live and he didn’t disappoint me or the capacity crowd at Vancouver’s premier indie rock club. Some of the highlights of the show (for me) included an awesome version of Fake Palindromes, and some of my favorite older tunes including A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left, Tables and Chairs and Opposite Day. New songs Imitosis and Scythian Empires were also great live. Bird’s drummer, Martin Dosh, opened the show doing his own looping act on drums, keyboard, beatbox and a one or two other instruments.
PS Though it’s not on his MySpace page yet, Bird told me that the trio will be hitting New York and playing The Beacon Theatre sometime in November.

PPS The shoes came off after one song, couldn’t see what color socks he was wearing.
