The Owen Pallett curated Maximum Black Festival kicks off today in Vienna, Austria. The lineup includes the musical stylings of: Deerhoof, Six Organs of Admittance, Dirty Projectors, Frog Eyes, Stephen O’Malley & Alexander Tucker Duo and Max Tundra, and Final Fantasy. The festival is being financed by Wiener Stadtwerke, an Austrian public works company that used an unauthorized cover version of the Final Fantasy song, “This Is The Dream Of Win And Regine” in a national advertising campaign. Instead of launching a copyright infringement lawsuit against Wiener Stadtwerke, Pallett got them to foot the bill for what eventually became the Maximum Black Festival. In return for their beneficence, Pallet granted WS permission to use the offending “cover” in their ad campaign.
