Loney, Dear at Union Hall | Live Concert Stream on NPR Tonight with Andrew Bird

Loney, Dear at Union Hall (01/31/09)
Loney, Dear

NPR Music will webcast Andrew Bird‘s concert from the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The live stream will begin online at approximately 9 p.m. ET, with an opening performance by Loney Dear.

Opening for Bird is Emil Svanagen, a Swedish singer and former pro cyclist who writes and performs as Loney Dear. Loney Dear’s music is sweetly innocent and mostly joyful, with candy-coated layers of delicate tones and atmospherics. As with his 2007 debut, Loney, Noir, Svanagen recorded the new Dear John by himself in his living room and his parents’ basement. For the 9:30 Club performance, Loney Dear will feature a full-band lineup, including Samuel Starck (keyboards), Malin Stahlberg (tambourine, vocals, keys), Ola Hultgren (drums) and David Lindvall (bass). SET LIST UPDATED: 02/05/09

* Much to my disappointment, “Sinister” wasn’t actually played on Saturday night. I asked Emil about it after the show and he told me that he was going to play it (it’s on the set list) as a second encore, but the sound man put on the house music before he got the chance to come back out. The new songs played well live, and in most cases, I think I enjoyed them better than their album counterparts.

  1. Regarding the setlist: Titans is the alternative title of I Was Only Going Out (from last album Dear John). Nama is in fact Ignorant Boy, Beautiful Girl, from Loney Dear’s second album (Citadel Band)
