Hip-hop megaliths Public Enemy celebrated the 20th anniversary of their third album, Fear of a Black Planet, in Central Park with a headlining performance at SummerStage on Sunday. Chuck D, Flavor Flav and crew performed hits including “911 Is a Joke,” “Welcome to the Terrordome” and “Fight the Power” for an up-for-it, all-ages crowd—drawing everyone from fortysomethings to toddlers sitting on their parents’ shoulders. Chuck D urged other rappers in the game to get political, and Flavor Flav teased the crowd by concealing his famous clock (yes, clock) underneath his shirt, finally revealing his enormous timepiece to deafening screams from the audience… Best nonmusical moment of the night? Flav introducing his kids and his grand-kids and losing track of their names (as any self-respecting grandpa would). P.E. closed out their performance with a killer “Shut ’Em Down.” [TimeOutNY.com]
