Neon Indian at Virgin Free Fest 2010 (09/25/10)

There was nothing laid-back about the midafternoon set of chillwave standard-bearers Neon Indian — except that it took place in the fest’s dusty, trippy Dance Forest, the spot where attendees were most likely to catch a contact high. This Neon Indian wasn’t the same inexperienced group that delighted critics last year with its woozy, retro-minded art pop but disappointed live. Turns out frontman Alan Palomo and his band have significantly pro-ed up, something that was most evident on “Should Have Taken Acid with You.” With its disco pulse and Palomo’s careening, angry-ghost theremin, the song surely killed some buzzes. That was OK: It was tight, energetic, and it got asses shaking. Thankfully, Palomo’s attitude isn’t too rock-star yet. Neon Indian’s debut, Psychic Chasms, was just re-released last week on deluxe CD and double vinyl via the FADER Label / Static Tongues. The new version of the album contains the bonus disc, Mind Ctrl: Psychic Chasms Possessed, which includes nine remixed tracks by Toro Y Moi, DNTEL, Bibio, Javelin, YACHT and more.
Alan Palamo (aka Neon Indian) is currently on tour and he’s playing two shows in NYC before he heads off to Australia for some festival dates. Tickets are still on sale for the October 29 show at Brooklyn Bowl and tickets go on sale tomorrow (Oct 7) for the newly added CMJ show on October 23 at the Bowery Ballroom (Buy Tickets).
