Ian Anderson and his band
Enter The Jethro Tull TAAB 40th Anniversary Sweepstakes
When you think of prog rock flautists, surely Ian Anderson and his legendary band Jethro Tull are the first two names that come to mind. 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of Tull’s chart topping concept album, Thick As A Brick.
In 1972, Ian Anderson wrote and recorded the Jethro Tull Progressive Rock classic album ‘Thick As A Brick’. The lyrics were credited at the time to the fictitious child character, Gerald Bostock, whose parents supposedly lied about his age. The record instantly became a number one Billboard Chart album and enjoyed considerable success in many countries of the world.
The TAAB 40th Anniversary Edition features a new 5.1 stereo mix, mixed by Steven Wilson, plus a DVD containing DTS & Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix, high quality stereos 96/24 (new mix and 1972 flat transfer), the original newspaper over 40 pages, an article by Classic Rock’s Dom Lawson, rare photos from photographers Didi Zill and Robert Ellis, recording and touring mementos and much more, all contained in 104 page 7 ½”x 5 ½” hardback book. It will also be available as a 2 LP set with the original Thick As A Brick remix, and the new Thick As A Brick 2, both as 180gm audiophile pressings and available for the first time in vinyl. The package also has a 72-page 12×12 book all held in a hard card slipcase.
In honor of the epic re-release of Jethro Tull’s classic concept album, I’m giving away two awesome prize packs: 1) Jethro Tull’s full catalog on CD (including the TAAB 40th Anniversary edition), and 2) A signed copy of Thick As A Brick Part 2 (the 2012 follow-up to TAAB) and a TAAB 40th Anniversary vinyl 2LP. Beasts of the Southern Wild Original Score: Music From The Motion Picture
Beasts of the Southern Wild, an independent film which is attracting some serious Oscar buzz these days, will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on December 4 via Fox Searchlight. In conjunction with the movie’s home video release, the film’s original score will also be available for the first time on vinyl. Composed by Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin, the score has received widespread critical praise.
Beasts of the Southern Wild has been a sensation on the 2012 independent film scene, winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Camera d’Or at Cannes, and finding box office success around the world. Critics and audiences have widely praised the film’s original storytelling, stunning score and cinematography, and potent visceral punch.
The score shapes the emotional arc of the film, in which six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) exists on the brink of orphanhood, in a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural order is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father, Wink (Dwight Henry), and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.
The Beasts of the Southern Wild soundtrack arose from a collaboration between the film’s director, Benh Zeitlin, and co-composer/engineer Dan Romer. According to Zeitlin, the two crafted it as “an anthem to express the ferocious, resilient, triumphant mentality necessary to hold out at the end of the world.” It was also important to them that the score reflect the point of view of its imaginative young heroine. Zeitlin says he and Romer intended to “put you in Hushpuppy’s head and experience the adventure through her eyes.”
If that description piqued your curiosity, perhaps you’d like to enter to win your very own copy of the Beasts of the Southern Wild Original Score on vinyl. Contest ends November 30 at midnight ET, US residents only, 1 entry per person.

Ultraísta, the new band of famed Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, drummer Joey Waronker (Jack White, Beck, REM, and many others) and front woman Laura Bettinson, released their self titled debut album on Temporary Residence last week.

OK, this is one is an unabashed attempt to gain new Facebook Likes. Mac Miller and his crew are in town tonight (Aug 2) to play the Nikon at Jones Beach and I’ve got a stack of MM tour posters burning a hole in my pocket. That’s right, if you’d like to win one awesome 11″ x 17″ Macadelic tour poster, go to bumpershine.com/macmiller and enter the contest. It’s an instant win contest, so it will last for as long as I have the prizes (I have about 5 I think). Good luck and if the Mac Miller Nation could tweet the shit out of this that would be awesome.
In other more serious Mac news, the young rapper is being sued for $10 million by Lord Finesse in a dispute over his K.I.D.S mixtape:
Veteran rapper Lord Finesse has filed a lawsuit against Mac Miller over the use of his 1995 track “Hip 2 Da Game,” reports Courthouse News Service. The suit accuses Miller of lifting the track for his own 2010 cut “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza,” which appeared on his mixtape K.I.D.S. and became a breakout Internet hit for the then-rising rapper.
The outcome of this suit could have serious ramifications for the future of mixtapes and mash-ups in general.
