David Cross, Jon Benjamin, Todd Barry
Went to check out a special beneifit edition of Tinkle last night at the hot and steamy Southpaw in Park Slope. Our hosts for the evening were the spot on David Cross, Jon Benjamin, and Todd Barry. The show was packed to the gills, the air condtioning was off, and it started an hour late, but the audience still had a great time and managed to laugh despite the heat. Here’s a list of the all-star the lineup:

Heather Lawless was the first comedian to come out, and she wasn’t really my cup of tea (and I don’t think I was the only who felt that way). She did a bit about breaking her hymen on horseback and a few other unmemorable jokes about her pubic hair and lesbians.
John Roberts, (from YouTube, not CNN), started out his act as a Zildjian representative berating Todd Barry for violating his exclusive endorsement with the cymbal maker. The joke was funny for about one minute, but it wore out its welcome quickly. Roberts came back on stage and did a homosexual character monologue that I guess he is kind of well known for (I didn’t know it). It seemed like he wanted to shock the audience, but people didn’t really bite. It was brief and well done, but a bit out of sync with the rest of the night’s comedy.
David Cross with Buffalo Tom
Buffalo Tom and played a two song acoustic set which was received politely, but not enthusiastically by the crowd. No disrepect to the band, but it just wasn’t their audience. People were mostly there to see comedy and unless you’re gonna knock them out with someone they all know like Wilco, they’re not gonna give. If you really dig Buffalo Tom, and want to see them again, they’re playing the Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night.
Eugene Mirman
Eugene Mirman, “who came all the way from one block away”, put the crowd in a good mood with some riffs on car rental agencies, London cab drivers, and an explanation of his newly invented art movement (name unpronounceable). I’d be willing to bet you a dollar that his visual aids came from the recent Bad Art Auction at the Hiro Ballroom.
Kurt and Kristen
Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal treated us to a little karaoke and an interpretative dance for Polio awareness (replete with glow ropes). A fight broke out in the audience during their set, so I can’t remember much else of what they did.
A.D. Miles
By the time A.D. Miles got to the stage, the warmed up audience (both physically and mentally) was really ready to laugh. Miles killed with his bits on his cultivated look, sticking out like a sore thumb at a Manu Chao concert, and selected passages from the Single Vegan Cookbook.
Patton Oswalt
All that set the stage for the big cheese of the moment, Patton Oswalt. Having just come back from his press junket Ratatouille, Oswalt shared his stories about trying to not be too sarcastic toward kid interviewers and how Tom Cruise played a major role in his best Christmas memory ever.
All in all it was a fun night for a good cause. Thanks for coming back Tinkle, hope to see you again soon. (If not, I guess we’ll just catch most of this lineup on Sunday night at Union Hall).
