Let’s hear it for blogs, cable-knit sweaters and Morningside Heights: Vampire Weekend, the band of Columbia University graduates that began its rise to indie-rock fame long before it had released any recordings, has reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart with its second album, “Contra” (XL). Issued last week, “Contra” sold 124,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving it an easy victory over Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” (Syco Music/Columbia), at No. 2 with 77,000 sales, and Ke$ha’s “Animal” (Kemosabe/RCA), which fell two spots to No. 3 with 67,000.
