The Return of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook – Elvis Costello

Some folks may recall when the Right Reverend Jimmy Quickly (aka Elvis Costello) called out his record company for releasing a super-deluxe edition of his latest live album that he felt was too expensive ($268.14 US Dollars at the time). Well, it seems that some time has passed and as the man himself predicted, The Return of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook album has been re-released at a more consumer friendly price in both regular (CD) and deluxe editions (CD/DVD). As what could probably be described his first “proper” live record (though one could argue that it’s his fourth if you count Live at The El Mocambo, Costello & Nieve, and My Flame Burns Blue*), TROTSSS cuts a wide swath across the Costello cannon. For those of you wanting to hear the hits, you’ll find “Every Day I Write The Book,” “Radio, Radio,” “Watching The Detectives,” “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” and “Alison,” those of you wanting to hear some deeper cuts or obscurities may appreciate, “I Want You,” “God Give Me Strength,” “Out of Time,” and the unreleased “Earthbound.” Mixed in amongst the “favorites of yesteryear” are some newer cuts (“the hits of the future”) like “Stella Hurt,” “Slow Drag with Josephine,” “Jimmie Standing In The Rain,” and “National Ransom.” All in all, it’s a solid live compilation with nice packaging, entertaining liner notes (Elvis never skimps on the notes), and a DVD that does a pretty good job capturing some of the visual spectacle of the Spinning Songbook tour (there’s even a cameo by Matthew Weiner).

If you’d like to win your very own copy of The Return of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook Deluxe Edition go to www.bumpershine.com/elvis. Contest ends on June 27 at 11:59 59 PM ET, 1 entry per person.

As I mentioned in the title of this post, Elvis also has added some new US tour dates to his schedule in September. Currently, all that’s been announced is five solo dates (w/o The Imposters) in California, but with a road warrior like Costello, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more dates come to light in the near future.

More Elvis Costello tour dates after the jump.
